Leica debuts new Q2 compact camera for $5000

Do you have $5 000 lying around to spend on a new camera? No, neither do we, but at least we can think about owning Leica’s latest offering – the Q2.

It’s the lauded camera makers second generation with the compact Q series form factor, and for this iteration Leica has introduced a range of notable enhancements over the predecessor.

Key among these is the fact that the fixed 28mm f/1.7 Summilux lens can operate in three different focal lengths thanks to some intelligent onboard cropping. This means users will be able to operate the Q2 in 35mm, 50mm and 75mm modes.

As for the sensor on the Q2, it’s a 47.3MP unit with an ISO range of 50 to 50 000, as well as featuring a refined autofocus capability. We’ll have to take Leica’s word on the performance of the latter, as we’d likely never get the chance to test out this camera for review.

Moving on to some of the recording functions of the Q2, it can muster both 4K UHD and 4K-Cine video shooting, with each also catering to 24 or 30fps. The entire body of the camera is also weather-sealed, which is a nice addition too, although it’s unclear how the rear mounted screen will fare in tougher conditions.

The Leica Q2 is available to purchase in select regions now, with a recommended price tag of $4 995 (~R72 453). If it ever did come to South Africa, you’re likely looking closer to the R100k mark.

As such here’s a video after the break to offer some respite.
