Nvidia’s GPU and monitor tech will win you that battle royale match, apparently

Are you terrible at battle royale games? Are you using the latest GPU and monitor technology? If you answered no those questions then you might be interested to know about the study Nvidia recently conducted.

The GPU developer this week released data which plots out how higher frame rates can lead to a better kill/death ratio in popular battle royale games, Apex Legends, PUBG and Fortnite.

Before we look at the data we need to point out that this data is heavily biased toward Nvidia and as such it can be rather confusing to interpret.

Firstly, let’s look at the most interesting graph in Nvidia’s findings, kill/death ratio.

As you can see above, running a GTX 6xx series card doesn’t help you get better at battle royale games. The best card to use would of course be one in the RTX 20xx series but, hang on a second there.

Getting yourself a RTX 20 series GPU will only improve your K/D ratio by 53 percent. Over on Newegg, a second-hand GTX 660 2GB retails for $144.99, an RTX 2080 Ti 11GB retails for $1 299.99.

We’re not accountants or anything but spending nearly ten times the money for a 53 percent increase in your K/D in one game type seems incredibly silly.

To Nvidia’s credit it does point out that skill and hours played are a contributing factor.

What we find fascinating about this graph is how it compares with the one above it regarding pure K/D increases based on GPU. Here you can see that even while running a GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti, you can expect to increase your K/D by nearly 150 percent the more you play the game.

Nvidia also dives into how having a 144Hz or higher monitor might also help you perform better in battle royale games. This at least makes a degree of sense as higher frame rates result in a smoother image which in turn makes it easier to click on enemies. That having been said if you find yourself missing more shots than you hit then you’ll likely just be seeing yourself die at 240Hz.

Will skilled players benefit from the high frame rates that better GPUs enable? Undoubtedly, but purporting that a GPU can actually make you a better player purely by plugging it into your system is preposterous. I have terrible hand eye co-ordination, and I play on international servers Nvidia, will your GPU make me a better player? I think not.

Being good at a game doesn’t come down to your gear but rather a combination of your skill, your hardware and many other factors. Nvidia’s “study” is somewhat useful because it gives you an idea of how its cards perform in certain, specific game scenarios.

Of course we advise taking the figures it reports with a grain of salt because we’ve yet to hear of a firm that tells you how bad its products are, even old ones.
