Violent student protests erupt again at UKZN and academic learning suspended

It seems as though there is no end to the recent students protests, as yet again the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has suspended lectures with immediate effect due to another violent outbreak that erupted late this week.

According to Times Live, students are protesting over funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for post-graduate learners, as well as security issues for those living off-campus, along with admission challenges.

Howard College, Pietermaritzburg, Edgewood and Westville campuses also took part in the protests, with Edgewood campus students stoning vehicles.

“The suspension will allow management space to engage with student  leaders and to ensure safety and security of our staff and property,” said UKZN executive director of corporate relations, Norma Zondo.

“I can confirm that cars have been stoned. As the student leadership we strongly condemn this. We don’t support the damage of property,” added SRC president, Sanele Hlongwa.
