Captain Marvel pulls in $455 million worldwide on opening weekend

This past weekend was a significant one for Marvel Studios, as the production company’s first female-led film, Captain Marvel, hit cinemas across the globe.

With the project courting controversy, in particular from review bombers, it would prove interesting to see how it performed over the opening weekend. Now that the final tally is in, Captain Marvel has done quite well indeed.

According to Box Office Mojo it raked in a massive $455 million over its opening weekend, claiming the second spot among all Marvel Cinematic Universe films to date, being bested only by Avengers: Infinity War.

The site which tracks domestic American and worldwide cinemas numbers also notes that the make up of the audience was 55 percent male and 45 percent female in the United States.

As far as how critics and audiences are reacting to it, at the time of writing Rotten Tomatoes reviews have it sitting at 80 percent, with audience ratings quite a bit lower at 58 percent.

With the film also being quite important for Marvel Studios in terms demographics and under-representation, it should be interesting to see if it continue the momentum of its opening weekend and prove as successful as Black Panther did.

Captain Marvel is also one of the characters expected to carry on the next phase of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), and actress Brie Larson will likely be as pivotal to the future of Marvel films as Robert Downey Jr. has been to date.

If you haven’t watched Captain Marvel yet, and want to get a spoiler-free verdict on the film, be sure to give our review a read.
