Former UKZN student develops maths app for learners

Doing his part in helping students learn and understand mathematics better, is a former KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) computer science student, Lloyd Gordon, who last week launched a new maths app called Open Omnia, which has been downloaded 1 000 times since the official launch.

According to IOL News, Gordon has confirmed that the app has been downloaded in South Africa and several other countries including Namibia, the US, UK and Egypt.

“I used to really struggle with maths in high school. I worked very hard to try to understand maths because I could not afford a tutor and needed extra explanations for some equations,” said Gordon.

After entering his prototype into the Ithala Development Finance Corporation’s Inkunzi’isematholeni Youth in Business competition, he came second and won R50 000, as well as   receiving funding from the UKZN InQubate initiative to complete his app.

The app has eight functions with different features such as problem solving exercises, a scientific calculator, graphic calculator, sequences and series, an equation calculator, algebra calculator, right angle triangle and matrix calculator.

The app can be used by high school and university students, with it available to download from the Google Play Store or here.
