The top 10 local artists & tracks during Spotify’s first year in South Africa

This week marks the one year anniversary for Spotify in South Africa, and to mark the occasion the streaming platform has decided to list the top 10 local artists and songs that garnered the most attention over the past 12 months.

At its launch last year in March, Spotify’s executives were asked about how seriously they wanted to have the streaming service as a platform for local talent and creators.

While the company cannot go into specifics as to how much revenue local artists have received as a result of being on Spotify, it’s clear to see from the below top 10’s that South African Spotify users’ tastes are far-ranging.

“Our first year in South Africa has been extremely exciting and we have been thrilled by the response from music fans. Our launch in South Africa – our first African market – gave us the opportunity to offer local music fans access to a world of new music and genres, as well as giving local artists the opportunity to connect with a global audience of music fans on Spotify,” adds Claudius Boller, Spotify’s MD for the Middle East and Africa.

As for who was the most streamed local artist, Nasty C leads the way, followed closely by Black Coffee and AKA in second and third respectively.

Black Coffee also featured on the top songs list, bagging the top spot with his track Drive, which features David Guetta and Delilah Montagu.

Spotify also revealed that the city of gold was the most musical city in South Africa, when it comes to streaming, and 22nd February 2019 was the most musical day since the service first arrived last year.
