Vodacom launches eSIM tech in South Africa

Since Apple announced the iPhone XS series last year we’ve been itching for news about eSIM support in South Africa and we finally have some.

Vodacom has announced a new product called OneNumber which is an eSIM and it’s partnered with Samsung to bring the first application of the tech to locals.

“The first eSIM enabled devices that will connect to the Vodacom network are the Samsung Galaxy LTE Watch 42mm and 46mm eSIM variants. These will be available exclusively through Vodacom and can be linked to the Vodacom OneNumber service. Support for other wearables and eSIM enabled devices will be announced in due course,” Vodacom said in a statement.

The network operator says that eSIM support comes after months of testing.

“We are excited to announce that we are ready to give our customers this game-changing technology. Together with our technology partner, Samsung, we worked around the clock to ensure a smooth experience for all our customers and to keep them connected wherever they go. We are also proud to exclusively stock the first eSIM wearable device in South Africa, underscoring our quest to be the first to deliver innovations to benefit our customers,” chief officer of the Vodacom Consumer Business Unit, Jorge Mendes said in a statement.

The main draw of having an eSIM is that you can create a digital copy of your existing SIM. This in turn allows you to leave your phone at home and still stay in touch using your smart wearable for example.

It’s also worth noting that Vodacom’s OneNumber solution will use data and airtime from your primary account no matter which device you are using.

As for pricing, a once-off connection fee of R98 will be payable upon successful activation of the eSIM and there is a monthly R25 VAS fee will be charged when linking an eSIM device to a contract.

As part of a launch offer, Vodacom is giving customers the option to add a Samsung Galaxy Gear Watch to their Samsung Galaxy S10 upgrade. Bundling the Watch with your contract will cost you an additional R199 per month.

Now we just have to wait for Telkom, MTN, Cell C and Rain to launch eSIMs.
