Wits’ School of Mining Engineering takes the 13th spot in global rankings

The University of Witwatersrand has a lot to celebrate as this year as its School of Mining Engineering at the University has moved up in the QS World University Rankings, reaching the 13th place, compared to last year’s 15th spot.

According to Mining Review Africa, Wits University’s School of Mining Engineering is the only mining school on the African continent to feature in the top 50 mining schools worldwide.

The QS World Rankings use six performance indicators, the most important of which are academic reputation, student to faculty ratio and research citations per faculty member. The others are employer reputation, proportion of international faculty and proportion of international students.

“This QS ranking means that as a school we provide an internationally competitive mining engineering curriculum. This is based on the work of our high-quality academics who produce impactful research and our graduates who enter their careers with skills relevant to the mines of the future,” said head of the School, Professor Cuthbert Musingwini.

According to the Mining Review Africa, the School has the highest growth rates of any engineering schools or department at Wits, and it has seen an increase in students to its course every year.

The programmes of the School of Mining Engineering include, researching deep level mining techniques, developing new methods to ensure the safety and well-being of miners, researching new technologies in mechanised mining systems and working to ensure the sustainability and the future of the mining industry so that it is beneficial to all.

Hopefully this upward trend continues, as South Africa’s mining industry is need of innovative solutions in order to stay internationally competitive.
