Holiday STEM programme launched for pupils in Chatsworth

The South African government has highlighted the importance of developing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills in the country, with an emphasis placed on helping to grow this industry.

Also doing their part in helping grow STEM skills is the Nelson Mandela Youth Centre, in Chatsworth, Durban. A collaboration between the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists and Engineering for Kids, the pair are organising a STEM programme for the upcoming school holidays to help the pupils from around the Chatsworth area.

According to the Rising Sun, the programme is suitable for pupils from Grade 6 to 9, with it being a four-hour session on 16th March, starting from 09:00 to 13:00.

“The session is structured to be exciting and entertaining with practical hands on components that will simulate real life applications, these activities will compliment the CAPS curriculum for school kids,” said spokesperson for Engineering for Kids, Divesh Maharaj.

Maharaj also added that the programme will also feature a presentation from the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists and will focus on encouraging students in participating in the expo and constructing and presenting innovative designs.
