Tumblr has lost over 100 million users following porn ban

Late last year Tumblr announced that it would be instituting a ban on adult content.

The ban came into effect on 17th December and saw all adult content hidden on the social media platform.

Before the ban was implemented Tumblr was a veritable smorgasbord of pornography and that wasn’t exactly a bad thing. The site became something of a home for numerous sex communities and housed what can only be described as an archive of porn.

Upon hearing about the ban, users pledged to leave Tumblr en-masse and looking at newly released data, that is exactly what they did.

Between December 2018 and February 2019 Tumblr’s monthly users fell from 538 million to 437 million.

This data comes from Statista which points to the porn ban as a reason for the massive exodus of users.

In December 2018, the platform banned porn and adult content, a controversial move that has sparked user outrage and caused artists and sex workers to move to other sites,” the statistics portal said in a post.

It’s hard to feel bad for Tumblr though. Last year chief executive officer Jeff D’Onofrio told users that they were able to find and share porn on various other websites. Well, D’Onofrio, it seems as if your users have migrated to those websites and we do wonder how many more will leave.
