Call of Duty: Mobile is free and filled with content from previous games

The Call of Duty (CoD) franchise is finally making an earnest move on the phone and tablet market with an upcoming title called Call of Duty: Mobile.

This was revealed recently with some trailers (embedded on this page) together with a press release we just received.

Looking at the trailers first and, if it is using imagery from the game, it looks very good for a mobile title. It looks very much like a late PS3 or Xbox 360 title, which some (like us) may have an odd nostalgia for given the franchise’s heyday back then.

What’s maybe more interesting is all the old content from previous games: characters, weapons, maps and game modes all seem to come from previous entries.

The end of both trailers also seem to tease that this new game will feature the zombie and Black Out modes that many have come to expect from mainline entries.

After this there is a link to a dedicated site where you can pre-register for the game. Apparently this will put you in line to receive new information about the title, updates on any betas that may happen, and “the chance to earn in-game rewards. Available in select territories”.

That all sounds well and good, but when we tried to leave our details we encountered an error. We assume this is either down to the servers being flooded with interested players, or our territory being incorrect.

The press release also has a lot of interesting information, including maybe the biggest depending on your stance of such things: Call of Duty: Mobile is being made in collaboration with Tencent.

The game is being developed by Tencent’s Timi studio for Android and iOS.

While many people dislike Tencent in all its forms, you can’t deny that it’s a clever move from Activision. The markets where mobile gaming are increasingly popular are usually ones where Tencent knows how to make bank with showings like the mobile version of PUBG, which it helped create.

Going back to that dedicated site and the FAQ section has some further details about the game, though some of it (such as release date and minimum required specs) has not been revealed as of yet.

The biggest piece of information there is probably that the game will be free to play, but there’s no mention on what monetisation there will be. We’re guessing the old standard of cosmetics and loot boxes will be used.
