Cell C unveils first public WiFi hotspot at University of Western Cape

Earlier this week Cell C in partnership with Facebook announced its first public access WiFi hotspot at the University of Western Cape (UWC).

This initiative is supported by the Facebook Express WiFi platform, the service provider explained, with the aim of the project  to roll out WiFi hotspots across the country.

“We are excited that Express WiFi is available to people in South Africa through our partnership with Cell C. Express WiFi represents the evolution of that partnership, helping build, operate, grow and monetise Cell C’s WiFi business in a sustainable and scalable way,” said product lead for Express WiFi at Facebook, Guy Mordecai.

“As an innovative business, Cell C is continuously looking for ways to bring affordable, superfast internet access to South Africans. This partnership with Facebook is an ideal way to ensure that we live up to that commitment,” added Cell C CEO, Douglas Craigie Stevenson.

The University of Western Cape said it was pleased that the service was launched in their institution, as this will enhance the student experience as the campus attracts the best and brightest minds.

“We are committed to offering only the best facilities to create an environment in which our students can thrive. WiFi connectivity supports our much-lauded academic programme and is crucial to research and innovation and teaching and learning,” noted UWC spokesperson, Gasant Abarder.

Cell C says that more areas will be announced once Cape Town’s City Municipality has approved additional rollout areas.

“Connecting more people across our country, especially those that are not yet connected is at the heart of this project, future projects will provide beneficial public services over public WiFi, that is also part of Cell C’s strategic aim with this project,” concluded Stevenson.
