Eskom says it has no intention of implementing Stage 5 and 6 loadshedding, yet

During a media briefing about loadshedding on Tuesday Eskom mentioned a slice of information that sent South Africa into a tizzy.

Following the press briefing Fin24 reported that Eskom was preparing for Stage 5 and Stage 6 loadshedding.

Eskom has clarified its position on the possibility of Stage 5 and Stage 6 loadshedding.

“During a media briefing today (Tuesday, 19 March 2019) on Eskom loadshedding a question was asked, ‘what will happen beyond stage 4 loadshedding?’. The response was that additional stages are in place as a contingency measure to ensure the operatibility [sic] and intergrity of the power system (i.e Stages 5 – 8),” said Eskom.

“The response was intended to indicate that Eskom will remain in control of the system through these additional contingency schedules.”

The utility went on to say that it has no plans to implement Stage 5 and Stage 6 loadshedding at this stage. Stages 5 through 8 of loadshedding would see power being cut for up to 12 hours a day.

The good news is that Eskom has plans in place for further loadshedding should the situation become more dire.

We should point out that as frustrating as loadshedding is, it’s implemented to protect the national grid from a complete blackout.

Eskom has said that it will provide the public with feedback about loadshedding and how long it will remain with us in 10 days time.

Stage 4 loadshedding is currently in effect on Wednesday from 09:00 to 23:00.
