Make your own WoW hunting trophy with a 3D printed Murloc

Murlocs are a beloved part of the Warcraft franchise and now you can have a 3D printed one in your home… in the form of a decapitated hunting trophy.

Maker Vitaly Gavrilov (who publishes his work under Spearmaster Cosplay) is the man behind this project who created it for a friend who happens to own a bar and loves Hearthstone. Here it makes a bit of sense why a hunting trophy was chosen as a present, as it would fit right into that setting.

Gavrilov tells us that the modelling process for this print took a bit longer (between five and eight hours) as this is one of the first projects he’s created in Blender. With much of that time dedicated to learning the programme, a similar model could have been put together in an hour or two, he says.

Printing time in PLA took much longer, however, coming in at around 60 hours due to the size of the assembled piece – 50 X 40 X 25 centimetres, if you count the spiny protrusions on the top of the head.

The raw plastic was smoothed out using a combination of putty, sanding and filler primer before it was time to add colour, with the initial attempt at it being a failure due to a paint spill.

Thankfully one of Gavrilov’s friends is a professional Warhammer modelling artist, and was able to take over painting duties and complete the job in only three hours.

With the printed part of the piece completed it was mounted onto a real wood board and hung up at the bar and you can see it fitting in perfectly with the decorations. There patrons can see smaller details, such as the bumpy skin texture and one of the teeth, which is painted gold.

Those looking to make their own Murloc hunting trophy can find the files to do so available for free over on MyMiniFactory.

It’s worth noting at this point that the entire project went from idea to completion in just nine days, which is incredibly impressive when looking at the final product.

Strangely, this isn’t the first hunting trophy that we’ve featured, but is actually the third. We’ve looked at a Witcher version in the past and a Wampa before that.
