What to download (or stream) on Netflix, Showmax and black this weekend

With today being a public holiday you might be up for some quality time with the couch and a movie or series, especially if you were clever and took a day of leave for Friday.

The trouble is that with Stage 4 loadshedding looking to be a permanent fixture in our lives (at least for the foreseeable future), your plans to remain on the couch all day may be cut short.

Thankfully streaming services Netflix and Showmax offer subscribers the option to download content to watch offline. For those who want to watch the latest movies, local service black offers the option to rent or buy the latest films.

So what should you watch this weekend?

Netflix

First up in a new series from Netflix. Created by Tim Miller, Love, Death & Robots is a new anthology series that tells a variety of stories in short seven to 15 minute episodes. The entire first season is available for download on Netflix. Warning, the trailer below is NSFW.

Sticking with series for a bit we recommend The Umbrella Academy for those who haven’t watched it yet. The series follows super-powered siblings as they discover family secrets and defend humanity from a looming threat.

The first season of Umbrella Academy is available to download from Netflix.

Switching pace for a moment, there’s Comedians of the World. There are only four episodes in this series and every single episode features a local comedian. We highly recommend giving it a watch in these trying times.

Behind the Curve is a documentary about Flat Earthers. While it sounds ludicrous, the doccie takes a deep dive into the folks that champion the idea of a flat Earth while also speaking to scientists. It’s a fascinating look at the human psyche and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

The Imitation Game, while not the greatest piece of cinema around, presents an interesting view into the life of Alan Turing during World War II. The film is about how the British cracked Germany’s Enigma machine but also the trials Turing faced when building what is essentially a computer.

Showmax

Ahead of the next season of Game of Thrones, perhaps you can spend the weekend catching up on the last season. Showmax is currently streaming Seasons 1 – 7 of Game of Thrones and if you plan to watch Season 8 on 15th April then perhaps spend the weekend catching up.

Showmax also has a number of locally inspired films available to download or stream for Human Rights Day. Films such as Sarafina, Bang Bang Club, Cry the Beloved Country, Winnie and many more are currently available to stream or download.

For those who prefer films, Power Rangers is currently out on Showmax though we’d hardly count this as a recommendation to watch it. If you can find nothing else to watch, perhaps Power Rangers will help you take that nap you’ve earned.

Showmax Original, The Girl from St. Agnes is also currently available to stream and download and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

Sticking with local, Five Fingers for Marseilles is also currently streaming on Showmax. The story follows Tau after he kills two corrupt police officers and it is absolutely worth the price of admission to Showmax. If you haven’t used the free 14-day trial Showmax offers then now is the time to make the most of it.

black

While black offers a streaming service it also gives South Africans a way to rent and buy movies as they come off of the box office.

Movie rentals range from R25 to R45 for the latest releases.

Speaking of which, black is geared for the long weekend.

Bohemian Rhapsody, the story of Queen is currently available to rent for R45, as is Creed II.

For those who prefer to be scared, Jordan Peele’s Get Out is available to rent for just R25.The film won Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards in 2018 and with the release of Us just around the corner we cannot recommend Get Out highly enough.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is also currently available to rent on black for R25. Comment from JK Rowling about the dalliances of characters not included.

There really is a massive amount of content across Showmax, Netflix and black to keep you occupied this weekend, especially if loadshedding persists or – heaven forbid – gets worse.
