Loadshedding above Stage 2 unlikely for the weekend says Eskom

Following a week of Stage 4 loadshedding South Africans can expect a brief respite from power cuts as the weekend approaches.

That’s not to say that loadshedding has ceased mind you. Power cuts are still set to feature through the weekend though they might not be as rampant or as extreme as Stage 4 loadshedding.

This afternoon EWN reports that Eskom’s top management has said is unlikely that loadshedding will be increased from Stage 2.

“We are very pleased load shedding has been reduced to stage 2,” chief operations officer at Eskom, Jan Oberholzer told EWN.

Last weekend Eskom was forced to up loadshedding to Stage 4 due to a shortage of capacity. One of the contributing factors was the loss of generating capacity from the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric plant in Mozambique. Cyclone Idai took down power lines in its wake leaving Eskom short on generating capacity for South Africa.

The utility had also run its diesel supplies dry and was awaiting a shipment of fuel which has seemingly arrived given the downgrading of loadshedding today.

Eskom also told EWN that the feed to Cahora Bassa had also been partially restored.

Here’s hoping that things remain as steady as they are and we have a weekend without sudden loadshedding upgrades.

Stage 2 loadshedding is currently in effect and is set to conclude at 23:00 on Friday.
