A traveler’s guide to affordable phone plans when you’re visiting the US

So you’re packed and ready to travel to good ol’ America. You have an awesome smartphone to go with you on your travels as you take selfies in the San Francisco Bay, in front of the Statue of Liberty, on the peaks of the Grand Canyon and a cut-out of LeBron James.

But now you’re left wondering, “How am I supposed to upload these photos on the go?” and “I’m just staying for several days/weeks. What’s the best short-term phone plan for me?”.

You could consider the big-name phone carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint but you know they are tailored for long term contract business. Their plans are generous but they are not for everyone, most especially if you are just there for a few weeks or months.

What if we told you that there are possible solutions to conserve your finances with some really affordable “no-frills” options.   After all, what you really need for your phone during your stay in America is just a stable connection with enough call time, texts and mobile data for dirt cheap, right?

Today, we will be discussing particular ways to save on mobile data without compromising your enjoyment of your new posh phone.

What You Should Look for When Choosing a Short-Term Phone Plan in the US

Simply put, consider America’s affordable but effective phone service providers. Providers such as Tracfone, Total Wireless, Metro, Simple Mobile and Freedompop offer plans with the number of calls, texts and data tailor made for you.

We recommend that you consider Freedompop.  It might have got our attention among the bunch, with its lowkey patriotic sound when you pronounce the name. Well, It’s the talk of the town thanks to its major feature – free of charge. Quite frankly, in our opinion, Freedompop is the best choice for when you prefer low data usage in the USA.

If you look at it, it’s the perfect cheap phone plan for any tourist.

“Are you kidding me? A phone carrier that is free of charge?”

Yes, good fellow, it IS free…or for the most part. You see, they do offer a FREE plan – 200 MB worth of calls and data, and 500 free texts per month. That’s good enough for someone who prefers low data usage, right?

In addition to those numbers, if you happen to call or text a fellow Freedompop user, you don’t get charged at all. It is free!

And if you so happen to prefer WiFi over mobile data so you can play games, stream Netflix, and listen to music on your phone, its available.

As an alternative in case your area doesn’t cover Freedompop, there’s always Simple Mobile that does almost the same.

That way, you can save enough money to try out America’s delicious fatty food, ride on one of their tourist spots or pay a ticket to watch the NBA or local esports.

But Why Not Go For the More Popular Ones?

The major phone carriers – Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint, to name a few, provide you with many perks that are really attractive, but remember, you are on holiday and only need the basics.

As an example, Verizon has a super strong coverage on top of 22GB of unthrottled data plus 15 GB more for the mobile hotspot. AT&T has a similar offer of 15GB of mobile data plus a discount on a DIRECTV NOW subscription. As an alternative,T-Mobile offers 10GB of 4G LTE data, 1080p streaming, unlimited in-flight wi-fi and inclusion of voice mail to text.   And Sprint gives you 10GB of unlimited text and calls plus 15 GB of 4G LTE data on top of a HULU subscription.

While these extra perks are cool,  they’re only well-spent if you live in the US and are not there as a tourist who does not have a huge circles of friends to call and text.   As a tourist, you want your new phone to connect to wi-fi, play the latest mobile games and enjoy some online music.

So fear not, child. That’s why affordable phone carriers exist so that a tourist like you can appreciate a slice of cellphone Americana at the right price for you.

So, if you finally get to go to America, and are looking for affordable cellular packages, consider Total Wireless, Metro, Tracfone, Simple Mobile, and of course, Freedompop.

You only need enough calls, texts and data during your small visit in the US, right?
