Kids Hack Day and CodeNgwana to bring children’s hackathon to SA

Private and public organisations are working together to get South African children to learn more about coding and robotics. One of the local companies doing so is CodeNgwana which has partnered with the non-profit global children’s initiative Kids Hack Day to bring its children’s hackathon to the country.

According to IT Web, the Local Kids Hack Day will take place in Johannesburg on the 16th June, with the aim of closing the gap between education and technological creativity.

“On Youth Day (16th June), children of all ages will be given tools and materials such as recycled material, straws, cardboard and motors to spark their creativity and build robots, said founder and MD of CodeNgwana,” Noluvuyo Mpekelana.

IT Web  adds that all Kids Hack Days are centred on the QuirkbotRobot Kit, which is a beginner’s microcontroller board that can be programmed using graphical blocks or open source electronics prototyping platform, and is browser-based.

CodeNgwana says that it expects 130 kids from Soweto, Jeppestown and Sandton on the day.

“It is important to bring the Hack Day to SA to expose children to technology and to redefine how kids engage with the latest innovations. There are not enough formal programmes or events that aim to teach children tech-related skills,” noted Mpekelana.

Free tickets are available on the CodeNgwana website.
