No Man’s Sky to receive update that allows you to play in VR

Last year No Man’s Sky received a significant update which developer Hello Games called Next. The update helped to breathe new life into the game, which up until that point was rather boring, despite looking beautiful.

Now Hello Games has another significant update on the way which will allow players to experience the No Man’s Sky in VR. The developer confirmed the update in a blog post, also pointing out that this is not a new or separate gaming mode.

“By bringing full VR support, for free, to the millions of players already playing the game, No Man’s Sky will become perhaps the most owned VR title when released. This amazes us, and is utterly humbling. The team is working so hard to live up to the expectations that creates,” explains the blog post.

As such it shouldn’t require players to pay for the entirely new experience, but we’ll get more clarity on that when the update goes live later this year.

Hello Games has not given a specific date for said update, but rather said Winter of 2019, which could be as early as June or July.

So what will you need to play No Man’s Sky in VR? Well this more immersive first-person version of the title is porting over to PlayStation VR and Steam VR, and as such requires players to have hardware and headsets compatible with both gaming platforms.

The video below for example showcases No Man’s Sky while played on PSVR, along with a few creative liberties.

While some of the finer details of the experience are unknown at this stage, as TechCrunch points out, it could prove an interesting element of Hello Games other big update for No Man’s Sky named Online.

Bringing VR to an online multiplayer version of No Man’s Sky could be just what the title needs, after a rather lukewarm reception at launch.
