Weta Workshop is Kickstarting a District 9 board game

One of the most internationally successful properties set in South Africa – District 9 – is back in the news again today as it’s being resurrected as a board game.

As is tradition in modern times, it is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter by Weta Workshop, a name you may know for its physical and special effects work in all manner of media, including the movie this game is based on.

The campaign has been up for just under a day and is already hovering at the $50K mark, which is a third of the $150K goal. We highly suspect that the goal will be reached before the end of today.

As for the game itself you can watch a short trailer of it embedded below. It takes place over three days (as seen in the film) and seems to be based on territory control within the district and benefiting off of the alien tech inside.

The game is for two to four players and uses a mixture of cards, hexagonal field pieces and 73 single-colour miniatures, including representations of characters like Wikus and CJ.

There are, of course, many different tiers to which you can pledge your money with the minimum amount for a physical product being $99 for the core game estimated for delivery in December of this year.

$169 adds an expansion back to bump the game to 5 or 6 players, and $539 nets six copies of the game plus extras.

There are a tonne of optional extras to add to your pledge together with stretch goals, so check out the campaign page to see it all.

Right at the bottom, however, you will find an absolute slap in the face for all of us here in South Africa. Estimated shipping costs and taxes are provided for many countries with ours simply falling into the very expensive “rest of the world” category.

While we understand that Weta Workshop is an American company and other parties involved in this campaign are all based overseas, it feels like a bit of betrayal that no extra consideration has been given to the country that District 9 is based and was shot in.

Oh well, if you order this game good luck with the post office roulette and the high prices.

Al that being said the previous game Kickstarted by them – GKR: Heavy Hitters – eventually made its way to stores where you can buy it right now at your local South African card shop. We’ve seen it on the shelves at places like Animeworx, so that may be the best way to go about things here.
