What you missed at DevConf Johannesburg 2019

Once a year developers descend on the annual DevConf conference for one day to learn more about trends in software and hardware development, network and drink litres upon litres of coffee.

This year the conference was held at Vodacom World Events in Midrand and it offered up a smorgasbord of talks and lessons about software development. We should point out that DevConf is also held in Cape Town every year – this year’s Cape Town event happened on 26th March.

The opening keynote of the Jozi conference was presented by Clifford de Wit, chief technology officer at Dexterity Digital, a new digital business within the Metrofile group. The CTO presented an enthralling talk about how developers have a responsibility of ensuring their solutions won’t sow havoc when they make it into the public realm.

You can find more on de Wit’s talk here.

While the conversations and talks were what folks were there for, a number of enterprises use Devconf to market themselves directly to developers. Luno for instance was at the expo looking for developers. You can find positions Luno is currently trying to fill here, just in case you happen to be looking for work.

Other exhibitors included Derivco, Microsoft and EOH which was making ice-cream using liquid nitrogen.

At around lunchtime the conference did have to be evacuated due to an alarm in the kitchen being set off accidentally.

Aside from a brief evacuation the conference was wonderful as always and the mix of attendees was great to see.

We’ve compiled a gallery from the DevConf expo but the organisers have said that videos of the talks will be uploaded within the next few days. We’ll be sure to share those with you as soon as they are live.

For now, check out our gallery and if you missed DevConf this year we highly recommend following the organisers on Facebook and Twitter for news on future events.
