Hundreds of positive reviews flood Risk of Rain 2 Early Access

While Borderlands 3 was the big announcement from Gearbox in its recent Pax East livestream, a smaller game that it’ll be publishing is available right now in the form of Risk of Rain 2.

This 3D sequel to one of the most beloved roguelikes surprised us by not only launching right then onto Early Access, but also that developer Hopoo Games had teamed up with Gearbox Publishing to do so.

At the time of writing its Steam store page has more than a thousand reviews with an amazing 98% of them being positive.

It’s worth taking that with a grain of salt, however, as less than a day has passed since the launch and it’s fair to say that most of the reviewers have just experienced the early game. Also: many of them may be huge fans of the first game and are walking in with a positive mindset.

That being said the trailer (embedded below) looks very promising, especially for roguelike fans like ourselves who have been itching for a third person action title like this.

The game will apparently be in Early Access for 12 months before its 1.0 launch which is planned to have “10 characters, 10 stages, 12 bosses, and over 100 items”.

Risk of Rain 2 is selling for $20 on Steam, which is localised to R239 in South Africa. Until 30th March, however, buying the game actually nets you a second copy you can then gift to a friend.

Aside from being a nice way to push the co-op nature of the game, this may help explain how it has gathered so many players so fast.

If you’ve never played the original it comes recommended and may be a good way to wait out the 1.0 release if you’re not into playing Early Access titles. As Risk of Rain 2 is seen as a translation into 3D of this original, it’s a great entry point and can be picked up for little money on Steam.
