Google Maps testing out feature to add public events

Google Maps is reportedly testing out a new feature that would allow users to create public events. As such, meet ups with friends and family could be a little easier to organise should Google decide to move the feature out of the test phase and roll it out to its entire community of users.

The feature was discovered by Android Police, with Google’s support page later issuing a step-by-step guide as to how people can set up a public event.

As mentioned earlier, both Android Police and Engadget are reporting that this public event feature remains limited to a small batch of users. Should you find yourself to be one of the lucky few, you’ll need to head into the Contribute Tab of Google Maps. From there, you can create a public event for a party, meet up or we guess anything really where people can gather.

Some of the elements you’ll be able to add to your event are date and start time, and if you really want to an end time, as well as advising on other aspects such as whether food or drink should be brought and what kind of entertainment is on offer.

This feature is still very much in the early phases of testing, with Android Police noting that the system was quite buggy initially and failed a few times. After a bit of waiting though, the site says all of the functionality appears to be working fine now.

As such there may still be a few kinks that need ironing out, but the addition of public events could prove an interesting one for Google Maps.
