The community of Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape gets free WiFi

Over the weekend, Communications Minister, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, officially launched J.G Connect WiFi that will now allow the rural community of Sterkspruit, outside Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape to connect to free WiFi.

The Minister unveiled the WiFi service at the Joe Gqabi District Municipality buildings in Sterkspruit. The free WiFi is set up to help students and entrepreneurs to be able to have access to the internet.

“You can use the WiFi to grow your business and to conduct research on the internet, but you need to make sure that you are knowledgeable on how to use the WiFi and constantly improve your skills. This is an opportunity for you to be internet service provider’s,” said Ndabeni-Abrahams.

According to SA News, the municipality said during the pilot phase they will register 500 users on a first-come first-serve basis, the users will be made up of 70 percent students and 30 percent consumers of municipal services.

The municipality did not mention, however, how many GB of data each user would have access to.

“As a student, I could not afford to buy data. I thank the municipality for bringing us the free WiFi as this will make it easier for me to study and access information on the internet,” local Grade 10 student, Siya Qozo, told SA News.

Ndabeni-Abrahams also warned the community about the cybersecurity dangers of being connected to the internet, asking locals to be careful with their information so they do not fall victim to hacks.

“The information that you store or put in your cell phone can be used to harm you, we want to caution you that you should not go to prohibited sites,” concluded the Minister.
