Apple AirPods accounted for 60% of wireless earphones shipped in Q4 2018

A couple of weeks ago Apple debuted their second generation of AirPods, with them currently up for pre-order for R2 899.

While the design of the AirPods have proved divisive, especially when they were launched three years ago, it appears as if consumers cannot get enough of the wireless offerings.

According to Counterpoint Research, the Apple AirPods accounted for the vast majority of wireless headphones shipped in Q4 of 2018. More specifically 60 percent, with the next closest being the Jabra Elite Active 65t.

In total the wireless headphone market saw 12.5 million units being sold during the same period, which shows that more consumers are interested in the form factor than in previous years. Add to this that some smartphone makers are toying with the idea of a 3.5mm headphone jack, such as Huawei and Apple of course.

It therefore appears as if the slowing sale of iPhone devices has not had as big an effect on their accessories, but Counterpoint does not go into detail as to what type of devices the people buying AirPods own.

As such we cannot say if the wireless earphones are being purchased for older, better selling iPhones or the newer ones which have struggled to find as large a market.

Nevertheless in spite of their design, and the numerous memes spawned as a result, consumers are still keen on the Apple AirPods. Whether that continues with the second generation remains to be seen.
