Eskom to provide feedback on South Africa’s power woes later today

The lights have remained on following a week of Stage 4 loadshedding toward the end of March.

At the time, minister of public enterprises Pravin Gordhan and Eskom management said that an investigation into the woes faced by the utility was underway. South Africans were promised feedback about said investigation and today we might hear that feedback.

Both Gordhan and Eskom chairperson Jabu Mabuza will address members of the media at a power station outside Johannesburg, EWN reports. The pair together with Eskom management are expected to report back on the investigation into the utility’s woes today.

Those hoping for good news should temper expectations. The power grid is incredibly vulnerable and the only reason loadshedding has been suspended for the last few weeks is that Eskom’s connection to Cahora Bassa has been restored and a delivery of diesel helped fuel power generation at some plants.

That’s not even taking into account the massive issues with maintenance Eskom has at its power generating plants.

This coupled with the recently implemented 13.87 percent price increase for electricity means that South Africans are probably not in line for some good news as regards the power grid.

Of course we’ll have to wait for Eskom to give us the prognosis about the local power situation and who knows, maybe there is some good news on the horizon.
