The annual Loerie Awards will introduce a YouTube category this year

YouTube adverts, the things that are some how louder than anything you were just watching, are going to be recognised at the annual Loerie Awards this year.

The Loerie Awards (or just Loeries) have been around for over 40 years and each year have recognised excellence in the advertising and brand communication industry. Winning a Loerie is a prestigious affair in the ad industry and now YouTube adverts are being looped into the awards.

Google South Africa tells us that six second unskippable adverts – known as bumper ads – and skippable adverts a minimum of seven seconds long will be eligible for consideration in the awards.

Advertisers and agencies will be allowed to enter one piece of work into the awards. This piece can be a bumper advert or multiple bumper adverts that together form one narrative.

Alternatively, a minimum of one skippable TrueView advert or one bumper advert can be submitted.

Something interesting to note about YouTube is that it keeps a tally of the most popular adverts on the platform which gives us an idea of what is popular on the platform when it comes to advertising.

On that note, Samsung took the top two spots in the South Africa YouTube Ads Leaderboard in March with its advert for the Samsung Galaxy S10. Taking third place was KFC with its new Zinger Chutney Burger advert.
