South Africa’s special voters registration applications open today

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has opened applications for special voters registration from today (4th April) to 18th April. These are available to any voter who is unable to cast their ballot on the voting day, 8th May 2019.

According to SABC News, there are two categories of special votes in South Africa:

Home Visits – These are only available to voters who are unable to reach a voting station due to physical infirmity, disability or pregnancy. Voters can apply to be visited at an address outside his or her voting district where registered, which  will be conducted between 09:00 and 17:00 on 6th and 7th May.

Applications can be made by submitting a completed VEC 1 form at the local office of the IEC, and forms must be hand delivered and can be done by a third-party on behalf of the voter. Forms can be downloaded or via an online application.

Voting Stations – These are available to any voter who is unable to cast their ballot on voting day. Ballots can be cast at the voting station where you are registered between 09:00 and 17:00 on 6th May and 7th May.

Applications can be made by SMSing your ID number to 32249 (R1.00 per SMS) or by submitting an online application or a completed VEC 1 form.

Both applications of special voters will receive an SMS notifying them of the outcome of their application once it has been processed, or voter can check their application status online.
