End of an era – Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe set to resign

Long-time Eskom spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, has announced his resignation from Eskom.

The spokesperson announced his resignation in a WhatsApp group used to communicate with media News24 said in a report.

“I have tendered my resignation from Eskom, and I’ll leave at the end of this month. I did my best to serve our company and our nation, and I would like to take some time off to relax and recharge, no pun intended,” Phasiwe said.

And if anybody has earned time off to recharge, it’s Phasiwe. The spokesperson has been working with Eskom for nearly 11 years as its senior communications advisor. Phasiwe has only been the official national spokesperson for Eskom since 2015.

“It’s been a bit of a war zone [at Eskom] lately. I need time to detox before I start anything new,” Phasiwe told News24.

War zone sounds a bit light considering the turmoils Eskom has been through over the last few months. Loadshedding peaked at Stage 4 in March prompting a mass outcry from South Africans.

Earlier this week Eskom addressed the reasons for implementing Stage 4 loadshedding citing Cyclone Idai, generator failures and lack of maintenance as the reasons for the electricity crisis in March.

We’d like to take a moment to thank Phasiwe for his service over the nearly 11 years he’s been at Eskom. While the position might not be as glamorous as those in the C-suite he kept South Africans informed about developments at the utility.

You will be missed but you’ve earned a well deserved break Phasiwe.
