Netflix ditches AirPlay support for Apple devices

Anyone using Netflix is aware that there is a five device limit for a particular profile, which means you often have to be careful about which devices you choose to use the streaming platform on.

A handy way of circumventing this is casting, and when it came to Apple products, their built-in AirPlay functionality proved quite useful.

That unfortunately is no longer an option, with MacRumors initially spotting the change on Netflix’s support page noting that: “AirPlay is no longer an option on Netflix due to technical limitations.”

As for why these limitations have only cropped up now, The Verge has a bit more insight into the issue, and it’s a rather poor one if you ask us.

Netflix confirmed to the website that certification for AirPlay 2 was the route of the problem. More specifically Netflix could not certify the type of device that AirPlay 2 was beaming content to, and therefore had no way of ensuring the visual quality of the streaming that was taken place.

As such they decided to ditch support for AirPlay altogether.

“We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn’t a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn’t) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices,” explained the company’s official statement to The Verge.

To our minds this seems like a rather extreme solution to turn to, especially as many Netflix users opt for the AirPlay approach when streaming, and technically speaking the casting option does actually work.

It should therefore be interesting to see if Netflix changes its decision, that is of course if Apple users make enough noise about this recent lack of support.
