R380 million allocated for TVET college campus to be built in Cape Town

The Department of Higher Education and Training has revealed plans to build a new college campus in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town worth R380 million. The forthcoming False’s Bay College campus will eventually accommodate 10 000 students.

According to Times Live, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college already has a campus in Merrydale Road, Mitchells Plain, which offers courses in business, financial and public management as well as educare.

“Part of the funding will go towards purchasing the 6.9 hectare piece of land, which the city made available at a nominal amount. This will enable the bulk of allocating funding to go towards the construction,” said Cape Town Mayor, Dan Plato.

The mayor added that the campus will address a great need for the education and training of youth in the Mitchells Plain and Strandfontein areas, serving as the first large-scale tertiary institution in the region.

“The facility will offer tuition in the key sectors of tourism, film, information technology, call centre training, retail programmes, business studies, paralegal qualifications and creative media. It will also have a cosmetology academy and will offer bridging programmes for youth who do not meet the minimum requirements for entry into TVET colleges,” noted Plato.

“This is huge for the young people of the Cape Flats, around 500 students travelled out of Mitchells Plain daily to pursue their education, at great cost in terms of money and time,” added False Bay College acting principal, Karin Hendricks.

Hendriks concluded that she had hopes that the campus would be ready to accept its first students in January 2022.
