YouTube wants to make original choose your own adventure content

YouTube is reportedly wanting to shake things up when it comes to their Originals content.

This according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), which says the online platform is looking into making choose your own adventure content as part of its Originals offering.

YouTube wanting to do so makes quite a bit of sense, especially as choose your own adventure content has had somewhat of a resurgence of late thanks to the success of Netflix’s Bandersnatch project, as its multiple endings prompted several rewatches from fans of the Black Mirror series.

Netflix is also doubling down on choose your own adventure content, having recently launched a survival with noted urine drinker Bear Grylls called You Vs. Wild.

Shifting focus back to YouTube’s reported entry into the segment, an unnamed spokesperson tells THR that their offerings will include both interactive programming and live specials. They will also look to integrate a few of YouTube’s products, but it’s unclear how at this stage.

Interestingly, choose your own adventure videos are not something new for YouTube, with creators on the site using the since cancelled annotations feature on the platform to create their own interactive content.

Did YouTube remove the feature with this new Originals programming in mind? Perhaps, but the more important element is whether they’ll be able to execute it as well as Netflix did with Bandersnatch.

Given the right creator though, we could certainly see an audience for this type of content becoming available on YouTube. Whether it attracts more users to Originals though, remains to be seen.
