Apple makes 15 more of its suppliers switch to 100% clean energy

Under its new CEO Tim Cook, Apple’s legacy appears to be shifting towards that of being a clean energy based company.

The recently built Campus 2 in Cupertino for example runs of 100 percent clean energy according to the company, and now Apple is trying to get its suppliers to fall in line too.

To that end Apple has persuaded 15 more of their suppliers to shift to clean energy while manufacturing Apple products and components, with two of the more high profile suppliers being Foxconn and TSMC. With the addition of this new 15, the firm now has 44 suppliers that have committed to utilising 100 percent clean energy.

Furthermore Apple says it’s now able to exceed its initial plan to four gigawatts of renewable energy by 2020.

“Every time one of our suppliers joins us in our efforts to address climate change, we move closer to a better future for the next generation,” noted Lisa Jackson, Apple’s VP of environment, policy and social initiatives.

“We’ve made it a priority to hold our suppliers accountable to the same environmental standards we observe and hope that our collaboration will show others what is possible. While we are proud of our announcement today, we won’t stop driving change within our industry to support the clean energy transition happening globally,” she adds.

This recent announcement is significant, especially as CNBC notes that roughly 74 percent of the company’s carbon footprint is as a result of the manufacturing from its factory partners. Getting more of them in line with the firm’s clean energy goals now means that carbon footprint is significantly reduced.

Yes, Apple is by no means a perfect or virtuous company, but this recent announcement does at least show that they’re willing to do their part to help the environment. With the likes of Samsung and others switching to plastic-free packaging, we’re hoping more organisations can take their lead from Apple.
