YouTube adds custom control over playback speed

Over the past few years YouTube has introduced and expanded on the ability to control playback speed of videos on its platform, and it seems to have reached its conclusion with its latest update.

As a quick refresher playback speed options on YouTube used to be limited to just 0.25, 0.5, 1 (Normal), 1.25, 1.5 and 2 times speeds.

Recently, however, this was expanded to include both 0.75 and 1.75. Then, just yesterday, the newest change in this option was made available.

On any given video click on the gear icon, then on “Speed” and a “Custom” option should be available in the top right corner of the popout box.

Here you will now have fine control over the speed in 0.1 increments. It starts at 0.25 and increases by 0.1 until you reach double speed.

At the time of writing these new options are only available on desktop and have not been integrated into the app as of yet. Thankfully, however, it is available on both the redesign of the site and for those of us who still use the old layout.

If you’ve never touched this part of YouTube before and think we’re being a bit anal over such a small change… well you’re right, but we suggest giving it a try before writing it off

We’re firmly of the belief that playback speed is now just as important as volume control. It allows users to compensate for content that is too fast or too slow, with a perfect example being education.

Unisa, for example, offers certain class streams on YouTube. The ability to fly through these painfully slow, sparsely important videos at a higher speed is a true godsend.

Give it a spin, we can almost guarantee that some of your favourite content creators sound better at 1.25X speed and, hey, you get to consume more videos in the same amount of time.
