Aston Martin debuts electric Rapide E at Shanghai Auto Show

In September of last year, Aston Martin offered up a teaser of its first ever all-electric vehicle – the Rapide E.

Now the EV has officially been unveiled by the British carmaker, with the Shanghai Auto Show serving as the chosen venue.

At this stage only 155 models of the Rapide E have been produced, and Aston Martin has stayed mum on the pricing for this new EV.

They have, however, detailed what this vehicle can muster, with a 65kWh battery powering it, and a pair of rear axle mounted motors producing 450kW of horsepower. As such the Rapide E is not slow out of the blocks, clocking a 0-100km/h time of under four seconds and featuring a top speed of 249 kilometres.

Being an electric vehicle naturally the driving range of this car is as important, if not more so, than its speed. To that end Aston martin is claiming a driving range in excess of 320 kilometres from a fully charged battery.

As with most listed driving ranges, it’s unclear under what kind of conditions it can achieve this in, but we’re assuming the driver doesn’t have the pedal on the floor the entire time.

If you’re wondering how the Rapide E compares to its petrol-powered counterpart, the Rapide S, the former’s V12 engine propelled just under the E’s four second 0-100km/h.

Whether it can yield as good a driving experience, remains to be seen.

With the Rapide E first announced by Aston Martin in 2015, the EV has certainly taken it’s time to hit the road, and is now available for order in selected regions (SA not listed). Given that there are only 155 available, we’re guessing they’ve been snapped up pretty quickly.

As such, give this video of the Rapide E a watch in the interim.
