Specifications for PlayStation 5 emerge in exclusive Wired interview

When it comes to gaming consoles, things are changing up a bit. Nintendo is pioneering the hybrid console setup, and there’s word of a streaming-only device coming from Microsoft. Google too is also entering the fray, although they don’t want to do the physical hardware route.

What then about the other big player – Sony?

Well Wired has a few answers as the publication recently had an exclusive interview with Mark Cerny, the lead system architect behind the PS4, asking him about the next generation of consoles from the Japanese company and the PlayStation 5 in particular.

So what did he reveal?

First things first, the PS5 (we’re assuming that’s what it will be called) will not be launched this year, according to Cerny, with a 2020 unveiling more likely if, unconfirmed.

As with all new gaming hardware from Sony, much is being touted for the PS5, including the ability to support 8K graphics, as well as 3D audio.

Sticking with specifications Cerny also explained that the PS5 will feature an octa-core CPU based on AMD’s Ryzen architecture, and in particular a 7nm design which will be paired with custom GPU based on the same company’s Radeon Navi hardware. This mix is said to bring ray tracing computing to the console, which is all the rage at the moment among desktop and PC specific GPUs.

One of the other notable changes will be switch to an SSD. Along with bringing the PS5 up to speed as far as competitors are concerned, the switch also affords the console improved performance, which Cerny demonstrated on the recent Spider-Man game. He says one of the game’s fast travel sequences only takes 0.8 seconds, compared to 15 seconds on the relatively beefy PS4 Pro.

Another important element is the fact that the PS5 will be backwards compatible with current PS4 titles, which is something Sony never made possible when the PS4 was first launched. The backwards compatibility also extends to the PSVR headset and controllers, although Cerny would not state outright whether a new generation would launch alongside the PS5.

Sony won’t be hosting a press conference at E3 this year, and there’s no word about one for Gamescom yet. As such we may have to wait until PlayStation Experience at the end of the year for more details about the PS5.
