This week seems to serving up some noteworthy news when it comes to consoles. Yesterday a Wired exclusive interview detailed Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5, and now Microsoft has finally revealed its disk-less console – the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition.

While you think about a shorter name for this latest offering, Microsoft has long been rumoured to have a console in the works that did not operate with conventional physical game discs.

Going this route makes a lot of sense, especially as developers and manufacturers have been switching to digital when it comes to exclusive and early access to their content of late.

Microsoft too is looking to capitalise on this, with their Xbox Game Pass mentioned several times in the official press release about the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition (seriously MS, come up with a better name).

To that end you’ll need a Game Pass in order to play any titles on the new Xbox One S console, but Microsoft has baked in a few treats for players in the form of access to Minecraft, Forza Horizon 3 and Sea of Thieves for those who purchase their new piece of hardware.

So how much will it cost you?

The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition will retail for $249.99 (~R3 488) Stateside, which the company says is $50 less than the disc-supporting version that they debuted a few years ago.

Whether that’s good bang for your buck remains to be seen, especially as local pricing and availability is yet to be detailed. If the price point is tempting enough, Microsoft may have a winner on its hands, with the industry now fully favouring digital over physical.
