Report says more students are enrolling in science, engineering & technology

Earlier this week the Higher Education and Training Minister, Naledi Pandor, released a report that contained figures showing that science, engineering and technology (SET) enrolments in the country’s 26 public institutions is on the up.

According to Times Live, the report Statistics on post-school education and training in South Africa 2017 (PDF), showed that enrolments in these subjects has grown steadily from 2009 at 237 058 students, to 310 115 enrolments in 2017.

“When comparing 2009 and 2017, all fields of study recorded an increase in student enrolment, with the largest increase recorded for SET field of study with 73 057 while other humanities field of study recorded the lowest increase with 25 972,” explained the report.

It also shows that the second most enrolments in 2017 were in business and management with 278 930, followed by other humanities with 252 826 and education with 195 113.

Times Live adds that the report showed three-quarters of students enrolled in public higher education institutions in 2017 were black African students at 73.7 percent, followed by white students with 14.3 percent, coloured students at 6.2 percent and Indian/Asian students with 4.8 percent.

The report concluded by noting that there were 210 931 graduates in public higher education institutions in 2017, reflecting a 3.9 percent increase as compared to the previous year.
