TUT launches first accredited Automated Weather Station

This week the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) partnered with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) to launch the institution’s first accredited Automated Weather Station, with the aim to provide hazardous weather warnings, alerts and site-specific forecasts to the people on campus hand to the SAWS.

According to IOL News, the launch was celebrated by all professionals who worked on the project and the students who came to witness. The weather readings can now be seen on a screen that has been set up on campus.

“Severe thunderstorms produce damaging hail, stormy winds and flash flooding. With a radar network we can give you the exact time when it will hit this institution so you can at least park your cars under shelter,” said acting SAWS chief executive, Mnikeli Ndabambi.

IOL adds that the university expects the innovation to enable knowledge sharing and research in climate and technical services, as well as forecasting and training.

Furthermore the station is expected to help in decision-making for sporting events, stating that lives could be saved from early warning of imminent lighting storms.
