160 000 unemployed KZN to benefit from R7.9 billion training programme

Earlier this month the South African government revealed that it has launched a development programme in the Eastern Cape to the value of R500 million to benefit ex-miners and youth in the province.

Now the Kwa-Zulu Natal provincial government is launching a similar project that is said to benefit the 160 000 youth in the region to the value of R7.9 billion in training programmes, which will be officially launched by Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant and Minister of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Nkosazana Zuma.

According to SA News, the training programmes will be spearheaded by the Department of Labour’s Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and Compensation Fund (CF), which have partnered with 32 state-owned training providers and institutions that will roll out the programmes over a three-year period.

“The training will include theoretical and practical training and learners will receive monthly stipends. The training will include skills programmes, learnerships and artisanship,” said the Department of Labour.

SA News, adds that learners will consist of the youth, CF and UIF beneficiaries, who will undergo training that will help to equip them with skills to compete in the labour market or venture into starting their own businesses.

The UIF will fund the programme through their Labour Activation Programmes (LAP) unit which focuses on mitigating the negative effects of retrenchment, enhancing employability, enabling entrepreneurship and job preservation.

While the CF will fund the programmes under their Vocational Rehabilitation Programme, which seeks to overcome barriers for injured and subsequently disabled workers, it aims to capacitate occupationally injured and diseased employees and youth.

At the time of writing there was no word yet to confirm when the programmes are set to begin.
