“Inclement weather” sows havoc on Openserve infrastructure

Citizens in KwaZulu-Natal are still recovering following weekend storms that led to severe flooding in parts of the province.

The storms and subsequent flooding have sown havoc in the province leading to the death of 32 individuals in KwaZulu-Natal. Communication infrastructure has also been severely affected according to Openserve.

“The current inclement weather has wreaked havoc to Openserve infrastructure in KZN coastal areas resulting in a significant increase in network related faults. The flooding has restricted technicians from accessing underground accesses in the fault zones and will cause delays in repair times,” the firm said.

Because of the flooding, determining the extent of the damage is tricky. Openserve says the extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Aside from damage on the ground, overhead cables may have been damaged by falling trees and lightning has affected equipment.

We are proactively monitoring all critical sites to minimise service interruptions and are doing our utmost to restore services in affected areas as soon as possible,” chief executive officer at Openserve, Alphonzo Samuels said in a statement.

“We understand the great inconvenience disconnection of our services brings to our clients and their customers. We will therefore be on extra high alert during this period, mobilising all available technicians to work additional hours if needs be,” Samuels added.

The CEO further advises that folks on Openserve’s network contact their service provider to report faults.

As for the storm currently stretching over South Africa, the South African Weather Services told News24 that it expects the weather to settle by Thursday.
