One could argue that information communication technology (ICT) has become integral to the African education system from both an infrastructural and educational standpoint.
In a bid to further the reach of ICT at schools, the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) together with the Free State government will this week begin launching Schools of Software Engineering at schools throughout the province.
This kicks off with a launch at Kopanong Secondary in Turflaagte, Bloemfontein this week.
Other schools in the province set to receive a School of Software Engineering include:
- Thabo-Vuyo Secondary in Rouxville;
- Lekgarietse Secondary in Welkom;
- Rebatla-Thuto Secondary in Koppies;
- Mohaladitwe Secondary in Makwane, QwaQwa.
“The schools were chosen for their track record of academic excellence despite depressed
socio-economic backgrounds, for their location (in five different district municipalities), and for the exceptional work ethic of learners, educators, governing bodies and parents. Each school is a stellar reminder of what is achieved when community stakeholders collaborate and work together to achieve great things,” SITA said in a statement.
Aside from providing each School of Software Engineering with 40 computers, SITA will also provide connectivity, a curriculum, mentors and other technical resources needed to make the school a success.
SITA says that the schools will equip learners with software development, coding and other ICT skills. Graduates will be given either a scholarship to further their education in an ICT related field or an internship at SITA.
The agency goes on to say that is proud to be a part of mainstreaming of the ICT curriculum and helping learners find solutions to socio-economic problems they experience using technology.
“SITA has previously donated fully resourced laboratories to schools. However, the SITA School of Software Engineering will also invest heavily in skills development to provide a career kickstart for continued ICT studies, starting businesses, or taking part in Learnerships at SITA,” the agency concluded.
