How to check if you’re registered to vote for the 2019 national elections

With only 11 days left until the highly anticipated 2019 national elections happening on 8th May. As you might know, casting your vote is your constitutional right, but you cannot cast your ballot if you are not registered to vote.

If you are still unsure about whether or not you are registered to vote in the area that you live, or have changed your address and want to make sure that you are registered to vote in the new area you are residing in, there are some simple online resources to assist.

With that in mind, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)’s website allows you  to check your registration status.

Here’s how to do it:

You can check your status on the elections website. You can click on the My Registration Status tab, and below it will be a large box that asks you to enter your ID number and verify that you are not a robot.

After entering your ID number and hitting submit, you will be directed to the next page where it will tell you if you are registered or not.

If you are registered you will be provided with details about your municipality, voting district number and your voting station’s name and address.

You will also be reminded not to forget your ID document (Smart Card ID, green ID book or valid temporary ID certificate) on the day of voting.

You also have an added option to view your voting station with a map provided by the IEC on their site.

Other Options

Not everyone has access to the internet, so don’t fret if you don’t have access to a computer or web browser, as there are other ways to check your registration status.

You can also SMS your ID number to 32810 (charged at R1.00 per SMS) or call the IEC’s national office on 012 622 5700 or its contact centre 0800 11 8000 to find out your registration status.

Seeing as it’s quite close to voting day, lines may be quite busy, so we’d suggest the SMS option should the online route be unavailable to you.
