3D Print of Gimli’s axe is a bit on the small side

The world of 3D printing once again returns to Middle-earth today as the maker community has replicated Gimli’s battle axe.

This project by Michael Schirmer is actually a remix of a design published back in 2016, which was simply called “Dwarven battle axe“.

Schirmer tells us that he modified the files across FreeCAD and 3D Builder over the course of about two hours.

After slicing in Simplify3D, it was time to print, with this axe being done over two different printers at the same time. Around 14 hours of total print time went into this, so budget for as much if you’re making your own.

Thanks to careful considerations here, this project requires no sanding, painting or other finishing work. The pieces simply fit together tightly without any glue and the appropriate colours of filament were used so that no extra colouring work was needed.

Now for the matter of scale, as this axe is 65 centimetres long and 20 centimetres wide at the head. While this may sound sizeable, it’s a bit smaller than the “real” thing, according to 1:1 props, measuring in at about 107 centimetres long depending on who you ask.

Thankfully, those looking to print their own versions can simply mess around with the scale until it suits their needs. The axe head will need to be widened but multiple extra lengths of the handle can be printed and added on to make it longer.

You can see how it scales up in the hands of Schirmer’s son in the gallery below.

If you would like a chance to make Gimli’s battle axe, in any size, the files to do so are available for free on Thingiverse.

Those not looking for 3D printed weapons from Lord of the Rings can check out Barad-dûr, the Doors of Durin or the Witch-king’s mask, all of which have received the same treatment.
