Home Affairs extending working hours for 2019 national elections

Earlier this week the Department of Home Affairs announced that it will extend its operating hours at front offices to assist eligible voters to collect their ID documents or temporary IDs for the upcoming 2019 national elections.

According to SA News, from 6th May to 8th May, front offices will operate from 08:00 to 19:00, to align their opening and closing hours with those of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

“It is the mandate of the Department of Home Affairs to ensure all South Africans, 16 years and above acquire the necessary identity documents to enable them to access opportunities and various government services,” said the Department in a statement.

SA News adds that the total number of all uncollected identity documents stood at 358 877 which comprises of smart IDs and green ID books. Furthermore Gauteng had the highest number of uncollected smart IDs at 101 787, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 55 634 and the Eastern Cape with 46 504. The lowest was the Northern Cape with 12 255.

“It is worrying that by the end of March 2019, the Department had recorded a total of 355 257 uncollected smart ID cards and 3 620 uncollected green ID books. With that said when you are in possession of an enabling document like a smart ID, green ID or temporary ID certificate, you are afforded an opportunity to cast your vote. Without any of these forms of identification supplied exclusively by Home Affairs, you cannot vote in South Africa’s democratic elections,” concluded the Department.
