Gauteng’s 2020 online applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 open in mid-May

This week the Gauteng Department of Education has announced that it will open its 2020 online applications system in mid-May for parents and guardians who wish to apply for learners going to Grade 1 and Grade 8.

According to Daily Maverick, the applications will be live from the 13th May until 15th July at midnight, and the applications will be in line with the amended admissions regulations, terms and conditions as well as the school feeder zones.

“Parents are urged to apply online and on time. Applying on time makes it possible to obtain space in public school,” said Gauteng MEC of Education, Panyaza Lesufi.

The publication adds that the amendments are a product of the Constitutional Court judgement which ordered the MEC to determine feeder zones within the province in 2016. Before the Constitutional Court judgement, learners had to live within a 5km radius of the school they were applying to.

“When applying online parents have a choice to submit a maximum of five applications, either using a home address, an applicants sibling who attends the school being applied to, work address of either one of the parents, if the applicant lives within a 30km radius and if the applicant lives beyond the 30km radius,” explained Lesufi.

Furthermore the Department added that the capacity of the online admission application system has increased to accommodate 50 000 simultaneous users, increasing from the previous 40 000 users which parents were complaining about.

The Department also said that parents can visit the nearest public school, district centres, community libraries and community centres for admissions, especially for those parents who cannot access the internet in their households.

“Parent are urged to use all five options because if you have five options it allows us to play along if one or two options fail. Furthermore parents should understand that living closer to the school does not entitle a person to automatic admission. Placement will depend on the time the application was made and availability of space in the school,” concluded Lesufi.
