Epic Games has acquired Rocket League dev Psyonix

In news that will surely add to the ongoing war between gamers and the Epic Games Store, Epic Games has acquired Psyonix.

The Rocket League developer announced it was joining “the Epic Games family” yesterday by way of a blog post.

“Your first question to news like this might be, “What does this mean for Rocket League and its community?” We’re happy to say that the answers are only positive. Rocket League always has been and always will be a community-driven game, and now that we have joined forces with Epic, we will be able to serve our community in even bigger and better ways,” said Psyonix.

The developer goes on to address a number of queries that fans of the game might have.

The biggest question may will have is whether Psyonix intends to abandon Valve’s Steam store and the answer is, unclear.

“We wanted to clarify something for you after today’s news: Rocket League is and remains available on Steam. Anyone who owns Rocket League through Steam can still play it and can look forward to continued support,” the developer said.

So that’s about as clear as mud then.

It seems as if Rocket League will remain available on Steam for the time being but of course, that could change at any time.

Indeed Psyonix says it intends to bring Rocket League to the Epic Games store front but whether this will become an exclusive title, remains to be seen.

Of course, with Psyonix now becoming a part of Epic Games rather than just flogging its game on the store, we suspect this won’t be the first time we hear about this acquisition.

The developer says that the Rocket League development team will remain intact.

The acquisition also remains subject to closing conditions, with the acquisition expected to be finalised toward the end of May or beginning of June.
