Spotify trying to make podcasts more easy to discover

Spotify has gone down a treat ever since launching locally early last year, and while the streaming platform has proved popular among music fans, it has recently turned its attention to podcasts.

The company is still in the process of pooling together a number of well-known podcasts with loyal audiences, as well as creating original content for the platform.

While all that is indeed good to hear, it still requires assistance from the software and UI side of things in-app to make podcasts more easy to search for and discover, in the same way that Spotify has been able to do for the music side of things.

This brings us to a new thing that Spotify is testing out, with The Verge‘s Dan Seifert recently discovering that the platform is starting to pair podcasts with music recommendations.

Said discovery was made by accident, as The Verge explains that Seifert was automatically subscribed to a playlist in Portuguese, which he does not speak. As such Seifert may have been signed up for a test by mistake, which Spotify was likely running in a Portuguese-speaking country.

What’s important here is that the playlist uses an algorithm to sift through both music and podcasts in order to create a combined mix that Spotify users may or may not be interested in.

“We’re always testing new products and experiences, but have no further news to share at this time,” explained a Spotify spokesperson when asked for comment about the discovery.

As such there’s no ‘official’ algorithmic playlist for podcasts and music just yet, but it would not surprise us the streaming platform has one in the offing.
