Facebook courting criticism as it bans accounts of so-called “dangerous individuals”

Facebook was a few members lighter this morning after it announced a ban of several figures from its services.

Among the banned individuals are Milo Yiannopoulos, Alex Jones and InfoWars, Laura Loomer, Paul Joseph Watson, Paul Nehlen and Louis Farrakhan.

“We’ve always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology,” a spokesperson for Facebook told CNN.

“The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive and it is what led us to our decision to remove these accounts today”.

The reasons for each of the bans was outlined as follows by the BBC according to information received from Facebook.

  • Alex Jones was banned for hosting Gavin McInnes on his show. McInnes is the leader of the Proud Boys and has been labelled a hate figure by Facebook.
  • Milo Yiannopolous was banned for publicly praising McInnes and English Defence League founder, Tommy Robinson.
  • Laura Loomer was banned for appearing with – you guessed it – McInnes and also allegedly another banned figure, Faith Goldy.
  • Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader was banned for several anti-Semitic remarks made earlier this year.

Following this ban Facebook has stated that it will remove pages, groups, events and accounts that represent the banned individuals.

The ban is not solely for Facebook but also for Instagram, which Facebook owns.
