Eutelsat has selected ground infrastructure providers for Konnect

Eutelsat is making headway with its Konnect satellite programme and has today announced the providers which will provide the ground network infrastructure.

While beaming internet from space is a great idea, it requires a way to receive that connectivity on the ground.

For this reason Eutelsat has selected General Dynamic SATCOM Technologies to deploy seven antennas while Hughes Network Systems will deploy its Jupiter ground network system.

“Ground infrastructure was the last missing link in our KONNECT satellite programme and this has been bridged thanks to orders placed with Hughes Network Systems (Hughes) and General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies, two trusted partners and references in their respective fields,” Eutelsat’s deputy chief executive officer and chief technical officer, Yohann Leroy said in a statement.

The antennae provided by General Dynamic SATCOM Technologies will stretch nine metres into the air to support traffic exchange. This will bridge the gap between the satellite above us and the ground network.

As for the ground network system, Hughes will deploy its Jupiter platform which includes baseband equipment and user terminals.

“The satellite, which has just completed its construction and is currently starting its test phase, will thus benefit from high-performance ground and in-orbit infrastructure on a cost-efficient basis to deliver competitive services to our customers,” Leroy said.

The satellite being deployed by Eutelsat are new generation multi-beam affair that offer up 75Gbps of capacity. The satellite is expected to be deployed and in service by 2020 where it will provide broadband internet to Western Europe and Africa.
